Cooking with John, Week of 1/11/04

PS, I Love You

Well, the applications keep pouring in, much to my surprise. You people do realize you'll have to work with Sonny Uppal, right? I guess, if you're up to it.

Double G Writes:

Hey John!

I wanted to tell you about Big Fish. I saw it 2 weeks ago (before it was out everywhere), and I really REALLY liked it. It's not as Tim Burton-y as you'd expect, but it's really great. The stories are very entertaining, and the acting is really good. I didn't even know Danny Devito was in it! (and how much of HIM there was... ew) But anyways, I highly recommend it.

Smell ya later!

"I can't believe 'smell ya later' replaced good-
bye..."

Well, Double G, I'm going to try to drag Hilden's ass to it this weekend since Christine works all weekend. Speaking of Tim Burton, wouldn't it be cool as shit if he made an Alice in Wonderland movie? And I'm not talking about a twisted recreation of the story like the game "Alice". I'm talking a straight-up adaptation of the book. Cool, eh?

I'm discovering quickly that buying a house is enough to make a guy insane. I've placed my signature on so many documents that it's gotten to the point now where I just randomly sign papers lying around the house whether or not they require my signature. If a newspaper comes, I sign it. Some junk mail? Signed. I don't give a shit. For all I know, I've commited myself to mowing the lawn of my mortgage lender for the next thirty years, I don't know. Does it really matter? I've already agreed to paying these people more money than I make for the next thirty years, so why not throw in some landscaping?

Wolves Vs. Spurs tonight. Game on.

Old Man River
Wow guys. I knew we'd get some responses from my post yesterday, but I never realized how many we'd get. I'm excited to know that so many of you are interested in working at GWX.

Now those of you that wrote in, don't get scared off. We're looking to add a good number of members to our staff, so there's a fairly good chance of you getting in. Just send in your applications and we'll look them over as soon as possible. If you have any questions about joining the staff, by all means, send me an email via the form at the bottom of this page.

Well, the Packers lost and I can be a happy man again. I won't say my prayers were answered because that would bring me down to the level of the average cheese-lovin' Packer rube who honestly believed that God had something to do with their little winning streak. If the Gods were watching down on Brett Favre a few weeks ago, he apparently pissed them off and threw up an egg last night, much to the dismay of everyone in cheeseland.

So much for the "divine intervention" that Terry Bradshaw was rambling about.

I apologize for that rant.

I have yet to see Big Fish, the recent Tim Burton movie, but would love to hear the opinions of somebody who has. I'm sure I'll see it regardless of your opinions, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Before I close for the day, I'd like to tell you a bit about Culdcept, the best game you haven't played. Give that link a little clicky and see what I've got to say about it. Even if you're not into the whole card/board game/Magic the Gathering schtick - which I am not either - Culdcept remains a compelling and wonderful game that deserves your dollar.

Plus, it's published by NEC. Show some love, dammit!

Traveler

As much as I hate to use cliches, you really cannot go home again.

I spent the greater part of last week in central Wisconsin for my grandmother's funeral. I saw some family members I hadn't seen in over ten years and probably could have done without seeing ever again. It's amazing to notice that of fifty people, there wasn't a sign of any dental work among them.

I like football. Not as much as basketball, but I do get into a good football game from time to time. And while I'm a die hard Minnesota Timberwolves fan, I can't imagine my fanhood taking over my life to the point where I would deck myself out from head to toe in Timberwolves garb for a funeral.

But then, Wisconsin is a different sort of place.

They breed them large there. If you're a Wisconsinite and under 250 lbs., you obviously need to get with the program. Speaking of "the program" my cousin, who is only five years older than myself, is already a grandmother. When she discovered that neither my sister nor myself have had children yet, she said, "You guys need to get with the program."

I wasn't aware of a program. Is there a handbook I need to read? I wasn't aware that becoming a grandparent at the age of 32 was a requirement for citizenship.

As I alluded to, a few of my cousins felt that wearing the same selections from the Packer wardobe to both the visitation and the funeral the night before was not only appropriate, but also a sign of great respect. After all, Lombardi is God and a funeral is a religious ritual.

Central Wisconsin is also the only place I know of that when leaving a bar, one can approach the bartender and ask for a "traveler". The bartender will then grab a plastic cup, fill it with the drink of your choice, and send you on your way.

Breeding. Drinking. Packers. I think that about covers what the average Wisconsinite has to live for.

All I can say in response is: Go Eagles!

I've mentioned our phantom email service here at GWX many times before. To make a long and painful story short, if your letter doesn't go up immediately - or at all - please don't think I'm ignoring you. It could just be that it's floating out in cyberspace somewhere. This letter from Ken was from December 18th, but somehow I just now received it.

Well, I see you have not updated your article yet, so maybe its lack of content. Here is a juicy bit of info that went on at my school yesterday. You know, its really funny how they had to mention T.J Solomon (he shot af few kids in our school up in 99 by the way) about every single thing that heppens in our school. I guess they feel the need to ridicule the kid even more. Anyway, enough about my school, had christine finished paper mario yet? Or is she still messing with paper invitations to send you to every blocks house this side of the U.S? Anywho, don't have long, stay cool, Just finished one of my exams (not that you care, but at least I'm not talking to you about my hamster) and you were right, prince of persia kicks F***ing Ass!!!

Ken

Ken, that is an unbelievable story and I hope you and your classmates are ok. Wow...unbelievable...

No, Christine has not come close to finishing Paper Mario, but she has taken to Mario & Luigi quite nicely and is on the verge of completing it. The RPG program I've put her on is coming along slowly, but still coming along.

I'd like to mention the Zodiac feature that I've been promising for the better part of a decade. We've been working with Tapwave since November to get our review units and games and have finally received confirmation that the units have been sent out. Whether or not this is the case, only time will tell, but for those of you eager to find out more about their new handheld, stay tuned. I really am doing the best I can.

I'd also like to mention that GWX is desperately looking for staff. We've had a bit of turnover in the last few months - as is probably evident by our dearth of new content - and are looking for people to do reviews, previews, news, and possibly a regular feature or two. If you're interested, and would like to know more about the requirements and benefits, feel free to email me via the message box below.
