Cooking with John, Week of 2/15/04

Push Me, Pull Me

Cardboard is my life. Cardboard boxes, cardboard liners, cardboard, cardboard, cardboard. To put it bluntly: I f**king hate moving. There is no greater pain in the ass than having to pack your entire life into a room full of boxes, move it across town, and unpack it in a completely different setting. Don't get me wrong. I love our new house. But reorganizing a system that I've grown so comfortable with results in something that is just shy of a nervous breakdown for me.

So here I am. Let's check the mailbag.

Ciao John,
this came totally unexpected: a soccer-themed competition by an american site?

Anyway, great pick: winning eleven 7 is one of the finest sport titles ever on any platform, i got the japanese version last year and i haven't stopped playing since...the winner will be a very lucky person indeed.

BTW, I'm out of the competition being in italy, but here's my fake entry: I deserve the game because if I don't get it free, I'll murder somebody. Now, you don't wanna take
part in a crime, do you?

keep on cookin'

Alessandro, my man, if the cost of shipping goods to Italy wouldn't break the bank, we'd be more than happy to enter you in the contest. Now don't go on a killing spree.

Speaking of the Winning Eleven 7 Contest, the deadline is passed and we're reviewing all of the entries. We had some really good ones and some really puzzling ones. Some people thought that simply writing, "I deserve the game because I like it" would give them a chance in hell, while others wrote incredibly long - and hilarious - diatribes. We should announce the winners next week.

The White Tiger apparently needs to ramble a little:

I think the Network adapters for all the systems are exactly what console owners have been waiting for and waiting for a really long time. I think being able to download new things for games make the Games funner and Raise the replay value. Now....If only a certain game designer company would make a certain game that could NEVER run out of add-ons...Hmmmm...Sounds like a best seller to me. With the ideas that are in MY Head,i think any game designer would pay billions for the ideas in my mind,i just keep poping them out like bunny rabbits i swear,my ideas are being wasted because no one wants to take advantage of them.I wish i could just work with someone because i KNOW for a FACT,the ideas in my mind would make a game Everyone would love and buy and keep forever, but hey..Time For Me To WAKE UP...

I know Tiger, deep inside every gamer is an untapped well of genius. And there is no doubt in my mind, simply by reading your letter, that your games would surely be funner than anybody else's.

Get some sleep, buddy.

Sink or Swim

So now that you've seen a picture of me humping a giant chicken, I assume things are square between us. You know where I stand and vice versa. So I'm not adverse to dropping my pants and posing for a chicking-humping picture. That's cool, I guess.

Marc writes:

Dear gaming world!

Not to sure if i have the right address but here goes!

Help! I recently bought Metal Arms:glitch in the system and, being a 30 year old novice gamer and internet phobe, have got stuck on what could and should be a relatively easy conquest - that of defeating the zombiebot king (him
being one of the first level bosses!)

Can you help?

Cheers if you can

Don't feel bad, Marc. You picked a hell of a game to jump into as a "novice gamer". Metal Arms is hard as freaking nails. I love the game, but dammit, it's a tough love. The Zombiebot King is fairly difficult for an early boss, but the deal is this: you simply blast the hell out of him until he runs out of breath and starts to pant. Then just toss a coring charge into his open mouth. Repeat this a few times until he kicks the bucket. Good luck, man.

Since we're already across the pond, let's hear from my favorite Brit, Philthy McHaymes:

Hey John,

Good luck with the move on Tuesday! BTW I'll also be moving into my first house on Tuesday and I know what you mean. So much debt yet I don't feel worried in the slightest... crazy
stuff. Anyway, enjoy the move and hurry up bringing us more CWJ!

Phil

Phil! As apprehensive as I am about selling my soul to the bank, I'm excited as hell. This house is truly everthing I wanted and actually far more house than I really need. Congratulations on your purchase, my friend, and I'll do my best to update as much as possible during the transition.

That's it for today. I've got a few more site related duties to take care of before I head off to the closing. But in the meantime, don't forget to enter our Winning Eleven 7 Contest. The contest closes on Wednesday the 18th, so get your letters in soon!

What I Won't Do

It seems to be becoming a regular trend in Drunken Gamers to have a picture of me doing something lewd and disgusting. Last week, I was molesting Janet Jackson onstage at the Superbowl. This week...well...you'll have to click over to episode ten to find out. Let's just say that I'm not really into mating with chicken-like creatures.

Well, the week is finally here. The week where I go so far into debt that I'll be subject to the bidding of mortgage agents for the next thirty years. On Tuesday, Christine and I will finally have our house and I'm shitting myself just thinking about it. Hilden, of course, does nothing but mock and ridicule my decision to move out to the 'burbs, but I won't be the one living down the street from a crazed teen gunman who's still on the loose. (Knock on wood).

Debt is something I've surprisingly already grown used to. I mean, when Christine and I went to the bank yesterday for a cashier's check in the amount of more money than I make in a year, I didn't even flinch. Not a muscle. Which could be a dangerous thing when I think about it. Could my Alienware laptop be too far behind?

Speaking of hi-tech gadgetry, I've ordered a wireless router and the Xbox Wireless Adapter. So yeah, the laptop is next on my list. I'm not sure why, but the idea of looking at porn on the internet from my patio - in plain view of my new neighbors - appeals to me.

I'm joking. Relax.

So my move is really going to cramp my GWX time for the next couple of weeks. What this means is that these little ramblings are going to be few and far between (luckily for you) and Drunken Gamers will be on a break for the next two weeks. I'm not sure if Sonny's figured out a temporary replacement, but knowing "Mr. Efficiency", I highly doubt it. But check back from time to time as I'll do my best to update.

And don't forget, you only have until Wednesday to enter our Winning Eleven 7 contest.
