CWJ Contest #2 I'm on my way out for the weekend, but as promised, here's the second Cooking with John contest.
Once again I'm giving away some anime on DVD and this one doesn't hit store shelves until August 26th. This week's prize is the first four episodes of Haibane-Renmei, titled "New Feathers". Here's the synopsis:
In a long-forgotten walled town, humans coexist with the Haibane, angelic-like beings of unknown origin. Rakka becomes the newest Haibane after she awakens from a strange dream and finds herself hatching from a massive cocoon. With no memories of her previous life, Rakka struggles to adjust to her new surrondings. However, burning questions remain in the back of her mind. What is Haibane and what is their purpose? What lies beyond the huge, forbidden town walls?
Last week I had you tell me your top five favorite video game characters. This week, I'd like you to tell me what was the single most idiotic decision ever made by a video game company? Email your answers in by clicking on my name below. I'll have the results sometime near the end of next week.
Well, I'm off for the entire weekend so there won't be any CWJ updates until Sunday night. It's a real bummer because Christine and I were looking forward to spending our first weekend together in what seems like months. Well, I guess that's probably because it would have been. Ah well, maybe next month.
Have a great weekend everybody and feel free to fill up my inbox with letters, rants, or maybe even haiku.
We Have a Winner! Regarding the Closed Circuit message I sent to Raffman yesterday, Raffman writes:
What up brotha.
You gots to get Midtown, it's one of the best online games out there. It's straight up gangsta with it.
By the way, Strong Bad has not updated his email, but I'm sure you will find this site fairly amusing. Click on go to shows and laugh. I recomend an episode of Poker Night or Behind The Music That Sucks. Good stuff.
Peace out brotha, drop me an invite for XBL whenever you want.
P.S. - You still haven't declared me the winner of your contest. What gives?
Well Raff, after reviewing all the entries, I have to admit, yours was the one that caught my attention the most. Here it was:
Good to see you're giving away free stuff. I love it. All right lets see, my top five favorite game characters of all time. I'll start from five and list down to one, aight.
5. Earthworm Jim- love that game, I still play that motha. 4. Those sexy female Nazis from RTCW. 3. Pac-man - Best. Arcade game. Ever. 2. Me, while playing RTCW online. 1. Me, playing RTCW online, while drunk.
Well there you have it John, now all you need to do is declare me the winner. You know you want to.
Peace out brotha, from your friendly neighborhood Rafael, A.K.A. Raffman01.
How can I argue with that? I mean, he even called me "Biatch" in the subject header! Any man as brash and bold as that deserves some free stuff. So Raff, send me your mailing address and I'll get your prize out to you ASAP. However, I have one additional rule. As I'm going to be holding these contests on a regular basis, I'm asking that if you win something, please hold off a while before entering again. Let's keep it fair, eh?
For the rest of you, thanks for entering the first Cooking with John contest. You people have some great tastes in games and gaming characters.
Anyway, if you didn't win, don't feel put out. I've got an endless supply of anime, games, and crap lying around and as a good carnie would say, "Everyone's a winner!"
I'm going to be announcing the next contest - hopefully - tomorrow. You see, Christine has had a bit of a family emergency and I'm going to be out of town for the entire weekend. Tragedy has struck, unfortunately, and we have to take a long drive to be with the family. The next prize up for grabs is another bit of anime not yet available in stores. I'll have all the details for you tomorrow, so stay tuned. And thanks again for entering.
Disclaimer I've been asked to use a disclaimer with this column due to my occassional tendencies to get a bit verbose and liberal with my expletives. Personally, I think this is a fairly PG to PG-13 column, but hey, there's no accounting for some people's sensitivity. So here it is:
The following column may or may not contain words or opinions that some may find offensive. These are the words and opinions of the writer, John Luedtke, and not necessarily that of GamingWorld X. If you are easily offended please enjoy one of the many other features GamingWorld X has for you to enjoy.
How's that? I'm not sure how I'm going to work that into each and every one of my entries without totally fucking [I can say that now. Just read the disclaimer!] the format, but I'll tool around with it a bit. It does seem a bit obtrusive though, doesn't it? Ah well, I suppose just like Hilden and a good shower, we'll learn to tolerate one another.
Hellbringer Nothing spells fun like watching two of my idiot friends (and I mean that in the kindest way possible) sit for a half hour, trying to find a game to join on MechAssault. You watch the little green bar load for what seems like an eternity, only to see "The host dropped out" pop up on the screen. You then relish in the screams of agony and disgust.
I picked up the Game Boy Player and Wario Land today. Of course, with the whole house buying thing still up in the air, as far as Christine knows, I haven't purchased a thing. Thusfar, the GB Player is more of a novelty rather than a necessity. Sure, it's nice playing Iridion 2 on my big TV, but the device surely won't replace the greatness that is the GBA-SP.
And as far as Wario Land goes, I know it's received some lukewarm reviews and reaction has been fairly low key, but damn man, it's Wario. I'll follow that fat-assed bastard to the abyss, cackling "Have a rotten day" all the way. I plan on throroughly enjoying all the whopping 3+ hours of gameplay over and over and over again.
We had a monster storm last night. I woke up at 4am noticing that it was remarkably hot in the room and the clocks were off. Taking a stroll around the neighborhood in my bathrobe in tornado conditions at 4am is a gas, man.
[Closed circuit to Raffman]: Sorry man, I don't have Midtown Madness, so I couldn't join your live game tonight. [/Closed circuit]
The Ocean I've been trying to think of ways to put the Neil Young concert into words, but every time I try I just sit staring at the screen. I can say this, it was probably far different than many - if not all - concertgoers had expected. Neil performed the entirety of his upcoming Greendale album, which plays out a bit like a rock opera. Because the album isn't yet released and not many people know what the hell it's about, I'm guessing many were left clueless and wondering why the vast majority of the concert felt like "Neil Young on Broadway". The tunes were fantastic, especially the one subdued acoustic bit he pulled out. It was vintage Neil Young.
Of course, the confusion caused many to wonder aloud, "When is he going to play 'Down By the River'?" He never did, but for his four encores, he came back and played favorites like Fuckin' Up, My My Hey Hey, and of course, Rockin' in the Free World.
The seats were great, the night was great.
I've spent most of the weekend playing Majesco's Iridion II for the GBA. A full review should hit the site shortly, but let me tell you that the game is highly recommended. Especially when most retailers are selling it for $15-$20. The graphics will especially wow you, and the gameplay should satisfy shooter fans.
Well, the search for a house has reached its first landmark. We found an incredible house in a beautiful neighborhood for a surprisingly reasonable price. Now keep in mind, "reasonable" still means that I will be poor as dirt once the down payment and closing costs have been made. It's funny because Christine, while generally frugal and thrifty with her money, can also be the type of person who goes from the "Let's look at houses" stage to "Hey, we bought a house!" in sixty seconds or less. Despite this, I have to admit that this four bedroom, three bathroom house is quite impressive and tempting. We're setting up an appointment for later this week, and I'm crapping myself just imagining the possibilities.
Damn, I'm getting old.
I usually like to end these first entries of the week letting you know what to expect from GWX over the next few days. Unfortunately, I haven't a clue. I'm sure Brendon will have a kick ass editorial, as always, and there may or may not be a Classic Game of the Week. But whether or not Paul will sober himself up long enough to bring you the Week in Review or whether anything new will come up between now and then remains a mystery. We'll just have to make the journey together.
Keep in mind that the first Cooking with John Contest is still going on. All you have to do is email me telling me what your five favorite game characters are and you could win a DVD and maybe some other shit that I might decide to throw in at the last minute. Again, I'm going to try to hold these somewhat regularly due to the insane amount of stuff I have lying around this place.
