Interview with Alex von Minden of SOE

To learn more about EverQuest Online Adventures, GWX took the opportunity to talk to the very pleasant Alex von Minden, who seemed more than happy to sate our hunger for answers to some inherent questions about the highly anticipated EverQuest Online Adventures.

GWX: Could you briefly summarize what EverQuest Online Adventures is all about to our readers?

AvM: EverQuest Online Adventures is a massive fantasy world that turns your PlayStation 2 from a simple game console into a portal to another universe. You will enter the brave new lands of Norrath and where you will be known for the strength of your sword-arm or the power of your spells. Choose from 10 different distinct races and 14 mighty classes to shape your in-game persona. Gather with other players to overcome mighty monsters, explore deep dungeons and gather untold riches and items of incredible power.

GWX: EverQuest Online Adventures is the first MMORPG on PS2, at least, in the States. Are there any troubles you've encountered blazing the trail for this genre on the console?

AvM: Troubles, no. Interesting challenges, yes! We have taken our experience from EverQuest on the Personal Computer and used that as a foundation to adapt the game to the PlayStation 2. For instance, the adaptation of the game control from a keyboard and mouse to the game controller presented us with a number of hurdles to overcome. Now, at the end of nearly 2 and a half years of development, we think you will be as happy with the game as we are.

Reader Question: What does the PS2 version of EverQuest offer that I can't find in any other MMORPG? --Donald R.

AvM: The unique, relaxed feel that comes from playing comfortably from what are typically the best seats in the house; in front of your TV!

GWX: From what we've played, the control scheme is very intuitive, and easy to get into. Is the entire game set up with this ease of use in mind?

AvM: In a nutshell, yes!

GWX: Could you please provide some examples of any PS2-specific effects you are utilizing?

AvM: We take advantage of the PS2 platform with DVD storage space as well as the powerful graphics rendering engine. The game features large vistas and seamless transitions from open outdoor areas to enclosed indoors spaces.

Reader Question: So, why should consumers purchase the PS2 version of EverQuest when the PC versions already exist? -- Scott S.

AvM: The gaming experience of Massively Multiplayer Online Games has previously been a PC-only phenomenon. We believe that there is a significant portion of interested gamers who own a PlayStation 2 and not a suitable PC to experience a MMOG. We expect EverQuest Online Adventures will expand the marketplace for MMOGs by opening the opportunity to play such a game to many new people.

GWX: Have you been able to use any of the code from the PC version of the game here, or did you have to start from scratch?

AvM: EverQuest Online Adventures was built from the ground up as its own game. While core concepts from the PC version of EverQuest were used to create the game, none of the existing code was.

GWX: Will EverQuest Online Adventures
support dial-up users? And if so, will it affect players who are using DSL or cable in any negative way?

AvM: The Network Adaptor for PlayStation 2 includes a Broadband Ethernet connector as well as a built in 56k Modem and the game has been designed to work across a 28.8 modem connection. Our internal testing and feedback from external testers through our Beta tests indicate that gameplay is fine, even on slower modem connections.

GWX: Will EverQuest use a pay-for-play model? If so, has there been any word on pricing?

AvM: EverQuest Online Adventures is a subscription-based game. The base monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

Reader Question: Can PCs slay NPCs or other PCs in the game? -- Jason K.

AvM: In EQOA, adventurers can come across many varied adversaries, from the lowly moss snake to the mighty scaled dragon. Combat focuses on cooperative teamwork to overcome foes. We are not including forms of Player versus Player combat in the game.

Reader Question: Will EverQuest Online Adventures on PS2 live up to it's title; as in offering as much variety and character development as the PC versions? -- Donald R.

AvM: Players can customize their character not only through their class and advancement statistic selection, but by acquiring the many varied weapons, armor and equipment found throughout the world of Norrath.

GamingWorld X would like to take this opportunity to thank Alex von Minden for being such an extraordinary help, especially when in crunch time.
