So First, Marry Into a Rich Family...
Dear Gaming World X,

I'm somewhat caught in a dillema. I can't decide on which game console to get: PS2 or XBox? I've asked around among my friends for their opinions and why. I guess it's now your turn. Which is the better system? If you and who ever else in your staff would like to contribute to this question of curiousity had to choose, which system would you pick PS2 or XBox and why? I would greatly appreciate your response and anyone else in your staff that would like to help me make a decision.

Sincerely,
Allan

Adam Responds,

It really depends on your taste in games. There's no concrete answer, except in terms of graphics, and it's really only in genres that the decision can be made. As far as RPGs, fighting games and Grand Theft Auto (it recieved it's own genre), the PS2 can't be beat, as many of the best titles are already budget games. But with games like Splinter Cell and Panzer Dragoon Orta out, plus some quality old action titles like Gun Valkyrie, Dead or Alive 3 and Halo, the X-Box certainly can pull its weight. Do your research - look at current game libraries and upcoming releases, and your decision should come easier for you. Alternatively, you could take up a week-long gig as a prostitute and make enough money to buy both and a Gamecube, Dreamcast, PSone, SNES...

Joe Responds,

Adam is correct; both systems have their strengths and weaknesses. If Sega’s titles interest you, the Xbox is definitely the way to go. For reasons that continue to elude me, Sega’s best titles continue to be Xbox-exclusive. Xbox Live is also a nice benefit, if you’re broadband-enabled and interesting in competing with other gamers across the country. The PS2’s main benefits are the killer third-party exclusives. Grand Theft Auto, Devil May Cry, and of course, most of Squaresoft’s offerings. It really depends on what you’re interested in most.

Fellow Gamers and Game Reviewers,

I am sorry to say that I am downright disgusted with the 8.8 awarded to Kingdom Hearts, easily the most groundbreaking and diverse RPG of its kind. Boasting a brand new battle engine that has never been seen before, and the best animation that Squaresoft and Disney have ever produced, I would have easily given the game at least a 9.5 or .6. You can expect to hear more critisism about your site from me, good and bad.

Just a little upset,
Tony

Adam Responds,
Well, Tony, that's the joy in opinions. There are people on the staff who liked it more, and people who liked it less - it just so happens that Bill gave it the perfectly respectable score of 8.8. To reassure you, our score is certainly not hurting the game's sales. And I do understand your frustration - I wanted to give R.A.D. a higher score, but Paul is a harsh mistress.

Hi. Do you know if Star Ocean: Till The End Of Time will be released in the UK?
David Swift

Adam Responds,

Enix has always been the type of company that takes things at their own pace - just look how long it took to translate Dragon Warrior VII into English! Judging by their track record, they'll probably make an official announcement after the game's American release in March, but as of now there's nothing official.

Microsoft, the Bane of my Existence
Reading Brendon's Vs. microcock article, I have to say he is much better with words than me. Everything he said in that article about Microsoft and the money and Netscape and running out competitors, is the very reason I hate Microsoft. I am afraid (so to speak) that they will ruin videogames. I mean they have to control everything, and I mean everything. They so have a monopoly with computers. Everything needs their products and I mean everything. You need a report like brendon said where can you find another word processor. People out there do not realize what he is doing, I go around school all the time telling people not to buy x- boxs cause your only ruining games. They always respond with "The graphics Kick ass man" Then I say "Well when you were little did you play games for the way they looked or the way the played and how fun it was and the story" They usually have no response. I have made at least 10 people buy ps2 or gamecubes over x-boxs (It may not be a lot but Rome was not built in a day) I really do hope that Microsoft gets there asses whipped with the wrath of a 1000 red suns. I do not say this because I have a ps2 or really want a gamecube. I say this for the times when I was younger playing ff3 or Toejam and Earl: Jammin (that game is the greatest) or Dragon Warrior, and Chrono Trigger. Microsoft is one greedy basterd, and to heck with them. I hope somebody learns something from Brendons article.
Final Bahamut

Adam Responds,

While I do think that Microsoft has done some good things with the X-Box, I'm tentative because of what they might do. Their repeated attempts to buy other companies have mostly been laughed at thus far (and have provided cannon fodder for witty, intelligent and beautiful people like those that work at this site. >.<) And while Microsoft is the mother of all evil, king of damnation, etc., when it comes to the X-Box, I think they're finally realizing that money will only help them in game development. But we shall see.

Joe Responds,

As I type this using the Microsoft Windows version of Microsoft Word, it’s hard for me to complain about Microsoft. Sure, they’ve practically monopolized the computing industry, but you could always get a Mac. People choose Microsoft. Anyway, I’m not worried about Microsoft monopolizing the game industry. As far as this generation goes, Sony has cleared already “won” and won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. Nintendo’s recent comments about the GameCube’s successor are also encouraging. Have no fear, this won’t be a one-system market anytime soon, so grab that big black box and enjoy some Sega, some Halo, and some Xbox Live. Now, time to open up Microsoft Internet Explorer and upload this article.

A "Question" for Brendon
Great article, but I'd just like to point out that M$ created XP to take on Mac OS X, not Linux (although, in truth Mac OS X has a Unix core). In fact, the announcement of it came almost right after the Mac OS X one, a recurring theme in Mac and Windows upgrade announcements. Now, of course, Windows is developing a "super cool" version of Windows with... Not-so amazingly enough, a Unix core. :)
Jarrett Lantz

Brendon Responds,

Thanks for pointing that out Jarrett. Because of my mix-up (or rather, because you just HAD to point that out), Joe lopped off my right thumb, and named it "Mac OS X". He then gave it to me as a reminder to never make that mistake again. Yeah Jarrett, thanks a bunch!
